The border does the quiet heavy lifting — panelled cartouches holding knight helms, crouching gargoyles, ravens and repeated fleur-de-lis motifs, so the eye travels the perimeter and returns to the middle. The palette stays disciplined: near-black and deep slate blue, oxblood red accents, aged gold. That restraint is why the detail reads instead of turning to noise.
